The Date Box

Updated: May 6, 2020

I am extremely excited to share my experience of the Date Box, which was kindly sent to me to do a review here on my blog. I absolutely LOVE this idea, we are a couple that have a lot of date nights, so I guess we’re lucky, but it was fun to try a new thing. It definitely allows you to think up date nights you wouldn’t have necessarily done before!

I had to wait a while for my box to arrive, as Royal Mail lost the first one!! But when it arrived I was totally ready for a fun night ahead. The box was sat in our kitchen for a couple of nights whilst we had some friends around, they found it hilarious seeing it on the side thinking it was some shady bedroom stuff! I assured them this wasn’t the case! When we opened up the box (along with a bottle of wine) I must say we were a little disappointed. At £24.99 (although I note they have now changed this, but it is still £19.99 + delivery) I thought it was a little over priced for what is included. Generally, I would have expected a little more – the box included ingredients to make a margarita pizza, and the email I received did say you may want to buy stuff to add. Whilst I appreciate that shipping is expensive, the ingredients must have cost under £5 – the box included; mozzarella, pizza base mix, tomato sauce, pizza cutter, fake mustaches, paper chef hats and some cards to write about each other!

If I was a paying customer, moving forward I would suggest a little more – perhaps a voucher for some fresh ingredients, or even a (bargain bucket) DVD. Nonetheless, we had a lot of fun.

Getting into the spirit, we put on our props and starting cooking.

The recipe was straightforward and simple, and we really enjoyed making the pizza, kneading the bread and spreading the ingredients. Whilst it was in the oven, we played the cards, in which you had to discuss things you love about each other, and what you noticed when you first met. This was slightly cringe for us, so we made it fun and were silly with our answers, but I’m sure if you had been together a long time (longer than 2 years) it would be lovely to hear!

I must admit I was very proud of our efforts, having never made pizza before other than in food tech at school – it turned out well! Next time I might even try to make my own base from fresh ingredients.

We then had a lovely evening, eating delicious pizza curled up on the sofa with a bottle of wine watching a DVD.

Upon reflection, I must admit this is a fantastic idea, especially for busy working couples like us who don’t spend much time together. There are so many of these subscription boxes out there at the moment, and this is by far my favourite idea. I’m really happy to see that the cost has come down slightly, it feels far more affordable for a stay at home date night. I would still like to see something a little more though, and would be very intrigued to try a different box.

If you fancy trying The Date Box, head over to their website I would highly recommend trying it to see what you think, or even gifting it for that couple who has everything… you can either get a subscription box which is a surprise each month, or you can choose your theme.

Fabulous idea, can’t wait to see what they come up with next 🙂
