Race Week Restaurant Recommendations - Cheltenham
Updated: May 7, 2020
It’s race week in Cheltenham and I can’t believe I’ve not written a post yet! Apologies for my tardiness 🙈. March is my absolute favourite month, for 2 reasons. Firstly, it’s my birthday (don’t worry, you haven’t missed it, it’s not until the 24th 😉) but secondly, it has to be the best week of the year in Cheltenham, the atmosphere is buzzing and the town plays host to thousands of people flocking in to enjoy the festivities. I feel happy just thinking about it.
This year, we’re not actually going up to the racecourse. We’re trying something new – some friends of ours are hosting a race day party at their house on Friday, and we can’t wait! It means we can be warm and dry, drink cheaper alcohol and not be packed into the crowds. I think I’ll miss it, but don’t worry I can always head to the races later in the year.
So, why would I be writing a post? To share with you some of my favourite spots in Cheltenham for breakfast, food and drinks! Enjoy 🐎
Baker and Graze
After a great breakfast? This is the place in Cheltenham to go for baked goods, you won’t beat their croissants!
The Old Courthouse
Brand new to the restaurant scene in Cheltenham, this place is worth a visit. Good pub grub, and perfect for a few beers before or after your day at the races.
We all know that this is one of my favourites, the triple chocolate cake is delicious, but for 1 week only they’re offering race day breakfasts. Get them before they’re gone!
The Ivy Montpellier Brasserie
You might remember I reviewed the new Ivy Restaurant just before Christmas. If you’re looking to add a touch of class to your morning, or evening, then this is the place to go. They’ve even themed the restaurant around Cheltenham Races.
If you’ve been here before, I’d be surprised if you haven’t heard of the Daffodil. Set in an old cinema, this beautiful building plays host to an array of festival goers each year. Fantastic for dinner, but if you can’t get in they have a bar which does awesome cocktails.
When it comes to a day at the races, these guys have got it spot on. Head up there for a hearty cooked breakfast, and your price will include a shuttle bus up to the racecourse. At the end of the day, if there’s enough of you they’ll even come and pick you up! And the atmosphere in there is great in the evening (we have been known to dance on tables before!)
Affectionately known by locals as Charlie’s, don’t go anywhere else for your end of evening cheesy chips, unless you want to be bitterly disappointed that you’ve missed out.
The Suffolk Kitchen
This little restaurant does some great small plates if you’re after some little dishes to share. And some tasty wines to go alongside.
The Bottle of Sauce
If it’s a burger or a pizza you want, look no further. Theirs are the best in town. Plus they have an awesome games room where you can get your competitive side out and thrash your mates at foosball or table tennis.
Tucked away in Cambray Place, this is my favourite place for a steak. Get there before 7pm to take advantage of their early bird offer, well worth the rush down from the course.
They do a mean gin and tonic. It’s en route to my house so this is somewhere we tend to stop at the end of the night.
The Cosy Club
Not usually one to pick a chain, the Cosy Club in Cheltenham do a pretty good job of changing their mind. Get a seat in their window and you can do some fabulous people watching!
These guys have undergone a few changes over the past few years, but they’re finally back at their best. Their Mac ‘n’ Cheese is to die for.
Looking for authentic Italian classics. This is the one ☝🏼
If you’re looking for somewhere to put your dancing shoes on (and you’re not 19) then 21s is the place to end up. Pop into Aqua Vitae before hand which is next door, I’m told their Espresso Martini is unmissable (if you like coffee – which I don’t!)
… if all else fails, you can always head home to your hotel and order a Deliveroo (Simpsons fish and chips, or The Ballroom would be top of my list)
Have a great week, and I hope you win big!
